Pockets deserve to get a lil dressed up too.
Hey hey hey! I had a leftover scrap of lace and had been debating for a while what to do with it (because wasting lace would be a sin) and finally it hit me: throw a pocket party. Read on for a relatively easy and ~dressy~ DIY.
Cheers,
Jacqueline
Materials:
- Pockets! Obviously!
- A piece of lace
- Sewing thread & needle
- Optional: fabric glue
Pick the pockets ya want to add a lil pizazz to! I opted for these fun pockets on an oversized chambray shirt. I liked how the darker, more rugged denim would contrast with the delicate white lace.
Line up the lace with the pocket and decide how you'd like it to sit. If you want to add the lace to two pockets, make sure you have enough before you start! I wanted to center the scalloped design on the bottom of this piece of lace with the middle of the pocket.
If the pocket has a flap, test to see whether the lace is high up enough on the pocket so that the top of the lace is covered by the flap. If the pocket has no flap, I'd recommend lining up the top of the lace with the top of the pocket for a more purposeful look.
Because the top of the lace will be hidden by the flap, I used fabric glue to secure the top of the lace to the pocket. Fabric glue is stronger than sewing, but unless you apply especially carefully, you'll probably be able to see the glue. Because of this, I chose to sew the two sides of the lace.
I glued both pockets first, then began sewing! I used white thread so it would blend into the design of the lace and not be noticed. I'd recommend small straight stitches, but do whatever you think is best for your particular pocket! Sewing expertise not required (I definitely don't have any expertise at all).
Sew both the left and right sides. In my case, the bottom didn't need anything since it would just be hanging. Next, carefully cut off excess lace, getting as close to the stitches as you can without cutting them. Take your time with this step!
Optional: For added security, I carefully dabbed fabric glue onto the newly cut edges to ensure that the fabric wouldn't fray.
And ta da! Now you'll have the fanciest pockets in all the land.
