Phrase Canvases

We only aim to make Buzz Lightyear proud.

This is a fun way to show off your favorite expressions for the world to see.

Cheers,

Jacqueline

Materials:
  • Canvas
  • The paper you'd like to collage with (I used music sheets, newspaper or a map would be cool as well - really any kind of paper something-or-other!)
  • Mod Podge (Regular glue would work also, just not as well in my opinion. What can I say, here at CC we're glue snobs)
  • Vinyl Letters (make sure you get the ones that are labeled as moveable!)
  • Acrylic Paint
  • Paintbrush

Time: 1.5 hours

We were inspired by this tutorial by Southern Belle Soul, Mountain Bride Heart.

(These first few steps don't have pictures - I'm really sorry about that!)

1. First, rip the pieces of paper into medium sized pieces. These will be collaged all over the canvas.

2. Apply a veeeeery thin coat of Mod Podge on 1/4 of the canvas. Place as many pieces of paper on this section as it takes to cover it all.

3. Apply a veeeeery (very.) thin coat of Mod Podge over the paper you just added to the canvas. This will help it stick to the canvas!

(Repeat steps 2 and 3 until the whole canvas is covered!)

The less Mod Podge you use, the less wrinkled the paper will get!

You can see how the collaged paper looks here.

4. Once the Mod Podge top coat is completely dry, you can start adding your vinyl letters any way that you'd like.

I used the blue tape to space the letters evenly from the border.

My vinyl letters are all odd colors from use in past projects!

You can see here how I arranged mine! Shoutout to Buzz Lightyear.

5. Make sure that the acrylic letters are attached all the way before painting. Pick a paint color, and apply a thin coat over the entire canvas. I didn't apply it too thickly to allow the music sheets to poke through in some places.

6. If you'd like, paint the borders a fun color as well to really make the work look finished!

I like the combination of the coral paint and the yellow - definitely makes me happy.

7. Slowly and carefully peel off the vinyl letters!

And voilá!

We'd love to see your versions of this - send them to us at thecobaltcollective@gmail.com!

I loved this one so much I made a bunch - scroll down for more pictures!

I made this for my momma!

This is a silly phrase we always say in my family (no idea where it came from it's so random).

10 bucks says you can't guess what sorority I'm in.

(This one done with spray paint instead of acrylic paint, but otherwise the process is the exact same)
